Walking on Moonsand, Heads Down, Ears Burning

This film was made in the Bromo volcanic region of Indonesia, in collaboration with the Tenggerese people who, centuries ago, resettled in the highlands after the decline of the Majapahit kingdom to avoid Islamization. The work engages with disappearance, loss, and dream in a broad sense. An Afghan proverb states: “Taxes drown valleys and names devour mountains”, revealing how power permeates landscapes and destinies. The horsemen of Bromo, though not entirely beyond the reach of state order, embody through their enduring presence a mode of highland life resistant to incorporation, offering contemporary society a lucid allegory.
